Trevor Zegras ended up in the penalty box for an incredible reason!

Trevor Zegras found himself at the center of one of the NHL’s strangest preseason penalties during Philadelphia’s matchup with Boston.

The Flyers and Bruins were playing what had otherwise been a fairly ordinary exhibition game Thursday night when Zegras was sent to the penalty box for an infraction that initially left fans and viewers scratching their heads.

The official call was listed as “improper wearing of equipment.”

The reason? Zegras had his jersey tucked into his pants.

An Unusual Rule Enforcement

The penalty is part of a broader effort by the NHL to more strictly enforce equipment regulations this season.

The league has reportedly reminded players that equipment requirements will be monitored more closely, including rules involving neck protection, visors, helmets during warmups and the way jerseys are worn.

Under the enforcement guidelines, players are expected to begin each shift with their jerseys untucked. A jersey that becomes tucked during normal game action is reportedly not supposed to result in a penalty.

The enforcement process also reportedly begins with a warning. A second violation can lead to a two-minute minor penalty, while a third offense could escalate to a misconduct.

That apparently explains why Zegras was penalized during the game, although the earlier warning was not obvious to viewers watching the broadcast.

Flyers Couldn’t Change the Call

Zegras wasn’t particularly pleased with the decision.

The forward argued the call with the officials, while teammate Travis Konecny also became involved in the discussion. Neither was able to convince the referees to reverse the decision.

The timing made matters even more difficult for Philadelphia.

Not long after Zegras entered the penalty box, Jett Luchanko was called for hooking, leaving the Flyers facing a lengthy 5-on-3 penalty kill.

Philadelphia successfully survived the situation without allowing a goal.

The Zegras penalty was also Philadelphia’s first individual infraction of the night. The Flyers had previously been assessed a too-many-men penalty, which Matvei Michkov served.

Michkov had already made an impact offensively by scoring the game’s opening goal.

A Warning for the Rest of the League

While the incident happened during a preseason game, its significance could extend well beyond September.

The NHL appears to be making it clear that equipment rules will be enforced more consistently, even during exhibition games.

For players around the league, the message is fairly simple: don’t assume a seemingly minor equipment violation will be ignored once the regular season begins.

Zegras may have been the first player caught by the new enforcement, but he probably won’t be the last.

And if officials are prepared to make the call during a preseason game, players may want to make sure their jerseys are exactly where the league expects them to be once the games begin counting.
