What Is Stan Bowman Thinking? Oilers’ New Signing Has Everyone Arguing

Stan Bowman isn’t finished after Oilers sign forward to a 1-year deal

The Edmonton Oilers acted swiftly on Wednesday, signing winger Kasperi Kapanen to a new one-year contract before he had the chance to test the unrestricted market.

The team’s own announcement states that the agreement has an AAV of $2.6 million.

That figure is significant. His former cap hit was $1.3 million, therefore Kapanen’s new price tag is essentially twice that amount.

It is supported by production. Kapanen recorded 8 goals, 9 assists, and 17 points in his 41 games with Edmonton this season, ending with a plus-5 rating.

Then the playoffs occurred. Kapanen recorded 6 points (4 goals, 2 assists), a game-winning goal, and was plus-7 in his six postseason games.

Numbers like that aren’t overlooked in July. Not when a club is about to lose its free agency.

With a plus-13 goal differential, the Oilers ended the regular season with 93 points, placing second in their division and 14th overall with a record of 41-30-11.

After a great playoff run, Kapanen’s cap impact increases by double.
On this particular occasion, GM Stan Bowman wasted no time. By locking up Kapanen before he reached the market, one name is taken out of an already small forward pool.

A one-year bridge deal is like a lease, not a mortgage. If the fit deteriorates, both sides can exit cleanly the following summer.

Is a winger who just scored a game-winning goal in the playoffs worth $2.6 million? It depends on who you ask about Edmonton’s cap sheet.

According to Bob, the figure is fair for Kapanen’s performance, but the short-term indicates that Edmonton is not fully dedicated long-term either. It’s a computed stake, not an empty check.

Following a career that has spanned several organizations, Kapanen enters next season still looking for consistency. Edmonton is optimistic that his playoff fire will remain.

This identical negotiation will take place once more a year from now. Moreover, the price may not remain this pleasant.
