During an erratic start to the season, an emerging group of rookies has provided a positive development as injuries and roster uncertainty have put the Red Wings’ depth to the test.
The first few weeks of the 2026–27 season have not been easy for the Detroit Red Wings. The organization’s pursuit of a long-awaited postseason comeback has been made more difficult by injuries, poor play, and trade demands.
An encouraging development has emerged despite those challenges, though.
The youngest players for the Red Wings are starting to demonstrate that the franchise’s future may be closer than their recent results indicate.
Several rookies have contributed to the Red Wings’ first 17 games, taking on roles usually reserved for more seasoned players.
The instability surrounding the company has been met with a fascinating counterpoint thanks to their appearance.
The Red Wings’ offensive success hasn’t been limited to their forward line.
In addition, rookie defensemen Anton Johansson and William Wallinder have started to make important contributions.
Both players began Saturday with two goals, a promising offensive start for individuals still getting used to the rigors of playing in the NHL.
In Thursday’s 2-1 loss against the Vegas Golden Knights, Johansson scored the Red Wings’ lone goal, which was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise frustrating evening.
