Simon Edvinsson’s Contract Position Could Put Detroit in a Tough Spot

Even though the Detroit Red Wings once again looked promising in 2025–2026, it wasn’t enough to make a real Stanley Cup Playoffs push, as we’ve seen over the last 10 years, and their drought has now lasted for a full decade.

The regular season is less than seven weeks away, and the team currently lacks direction and has not reached a resolution regarding Dylan Larkin or a new general manager since Steve Yzerman’s departure. This is unfortunate. The 23-year-old has now made his position on the issue apparent, and the last thing they lack is a new contract for promising young defenseman Simon Edvinsson.

Simon Edvinsson Will Not Talk to an Interim GM About His Contract.

Updates regarding Detroit’s GM hiring procedure have surfaced recently, and now that it has started, a new name will probably be revealed in that position in less than a month, along with a possible second person to take on the President of Hockey Operations role.

Nothing is imminent right now, but things might start to move pretty quickly in the next few weeks, which will hinder discussions with Edvinsson. The representatives of Edvinsson (CAA) informed Expressen.se in Sweden in a recent interview that they will wait until a new GM is appointed before commencing discussions about an extension with the organization.

While it makes sense for the Edvinsson camp not to sign a long-term agreement with an interim general manager who might go against the wishes of a full-time general manager, given the player’s talent at only 23 years old, it would be logical for the new general manager to prioritize this matter.

The future of the Red Wings depends heavily on Simon Edvinsson.

Edvinsson has scored 16 goals and accumulated 56 points in 150 games during the last two seasons. Considering that his potential is significantly higher than what these statistics indicate, he is an essential part of the blue line’s future, along with Moritz Seider, whom he often played with in the 2025/26 season.

Edvinsson is still an RFA, which means he is exposed to signing an offer sheet at any moment. Furthermore, since Detroit has waited so long, other comparable defensemen have signed expensive contracts, which will now force the team to pay him significantly more than they could have at the start of the offseason.

Ultimately, Edvinsson is a former first-round pick in Detroit, and given all that the team have poured into his development, there’s no way that they’ll be giving up on him anytime soon, so whenever a new GM is hired, likely across the next 3-4 weeks, this should be one of, if not the first piece of business that they look to take care of.
