Stan Bowman’s Edmonton Oilers are not afraid to negotiate trades. Nevertheless, they must be the appropriate agreements (unlike this Boston Bruins-Dylan Larkin trade pitch). According to one NHL insider, the Oilers should look into trading for Simon Edvinsson of the Detroit Red Wings right now.
Long-time Edmonton journalist and NHL insider Jim Matheson went on social media after their Spencer Stastney for Filip Hallander transaction. On Thursday, October 8th, he posted his thoughts on how the Oilers should go after the young Swedish defender, Edvinsson.
“Like many NHL GMs, if I were Stan Bowman, I would be very interested in finding out what it would take to acquire Simon Edvinsson, a younger version of Ekholm. He would have to earn enough money, but Edvinsson is 6’6″, 23 years old, and a top 4 D all day long.” Matheson wrote, “It might be a pipe dream, but I’m going for it.”
At 23 years old, Edvinsson is a defender. Having recently completed his entry-level deal, the 6-foot-6, 222-pound blueliner is currently an RFA. In the 2025–26 season, he played 72 games and averaged little over 22 minutes each contest.
Edmonton Oilers would face competition to sign Simon Edvinsson.
Many suitors are vying for a chance to sign Edvinsson because of the open nature of his circumstance.
This material was recently reported by NHL insider Pierre LeBrun.
Lebrun wrote on Thursday, October 8, “Boston is one of a long list of teams that has expressed interest in Simon Edvinsson. I think that at least ten teams have made inquiries. However, interim GM Shawn Horcoff is informing those teams that he would prefer to re-sign the RFA. A trade will become possible the longer this lasts. Detroit, however, still wants to sign him. Horcoff has been granted complete authority by the owner to complete an extension with Edvinsson, who has received long-, medium-, and short-term contract proposals. There is still a significant difference in pay.
It is hardly unexpected to see a squad like the Boston Bruins on top of the list. Approximately half of the NHL teams would be interested in Edvinsson, which is a fair assumption.
