Marchenko Trade Gets Complicated as Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets Add More Pieces
What initially appeared to be a relatively straightforward blockbuster between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets has quickly become a much more complicated transaction.
The centerpiece remains Kirill Marchenko, who is headed to Toronto and is expected to sign a contract extension with the Maple Leafs.
But the return going to Columbus is also taking shape.
Matthew Knies has been confirmed as part of the deal, while goaltender Elvis Merzlikins has also been identified as another piece moving to Toronto.
And there may still be more to come.
Is Anthony Stolarz Also Involved?
One of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the trade is Toronto goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
There has been speculation that Stolarz could be included, but that portion of the deal has not been officially confirmed.
For now, the known framework involves Marchenko, Knies and Merzlikins, with the possibility of additional players being added before the transaction is finalized.
The complexity isn’t entirely unexpected.
Elliotte Friedman previously reported that Columbus was exploring ways to move additional contracts as part of a Marchenko trade. Players such as Miles Wood, Dmitri Voronkov and Merzlikins were mentioned as potential pieces that could be included in a larger transaction.
Merzlikins, in particular, would make sense in that context.
The veteran goaltender was placed on injured reserve on September 25 while dealing with a shoulder issue, and Columbus previously announced that he had undergone surgery during the offseason.
Toronto Gets a Proven Goal Scorer
For the Maple Leafs, the main attraction is obvious.
Marchenko has developed into one of Columbus’ most dangerous offensive players since arriving in North America.
The Blue Jackets selected the Russian winger 49th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, but he remained in Russia for several seasons before making his NHL debut during the 2022-23 campaign.
He immediately showed scoring potential, finishing his rookie season with 21 goals in 59 games.
His production continued to climb.
Marchenko recorded 23 goals and 42 points in 2023-24 before breaking out with 31 goals and 74 points in 79 games the following season.
He remained productive last year, adding 27 goals and 67 points in 76 games.
Toronto is clearly betting that his scoring ability will translate into a major role with the Maple Leafs.
And this doesn’t appear to be a simple rental acquisition.
The expectation that Marchenko will sign an extension suggests Toronto views the 26-year-old as part of its longer-term plans.
Columbus Gets a Major Piece in Knies
The Blue Jackets, meanwhile, aren’t simply giving up an established scorer without receiving an important young player in return.
Knies has become a significant part of Toronto’s lineup and is coming off a 66-point season.
The 23-year-old brings size, physicality and versatility, giving Columbus another young building block as the organization continues developing its core.
Merzlikins’ inclusion adds another dimension to the trade.
If Stolarz ultimately becomes part of the transaction as well, the goaltending situation could become one of the most intriguing elements of the entire deal.
