Maple Leafs Shock NHL With Massive Kirill Marchenko Trade
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made one of the biggest moves of the NHL offseason, shaking up their forward group just days before the 2026-27 regular season begins.
Toronto has reportedly agreed to send Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz, Emil Andrae and a second-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Kirill Marchenko, Miles Wood and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins.
Columbus is also retaining part of Merzlikins’ salary as part of the transaction.
The reported deal doesn’t just add several new pieces to Toronto’s roster—it also marks the end of Knies’ time with the Maple Leafs.
Toronto Gives Up a Key Young Player
Knies had emerged as one of the most important young pieces in Toronto’s long-term plans.
The 23-year-old forward took a major step forward during the 2025-26 season, producing career-best numbers with 66 points in 79 games.
His combination of size, physicality and offensive ability made him particularly valuable to the Maple Leafs, and he had been projected to play alongside Auston Matthews on Toronto’s top line entering the new season.

According to the details provided, Marchenko has also agreed to a six-year contract carrying an average annual value of $12.5 million.
That makes the move much more than a short-term gamble. Toronto is apparently committing significant money to Marchenko with the expectation that he becomes one of the central pieces of its offense for years to come.
More Than Just a One-for-One Swap
The additional pieces make this transaction considerably more complicated than simply replacing Knies with Marchenko.
Toronto receives Wood, who adds another physical element to the forward group, while Merzlikins gives the Maple Leafs another goaltending option.
The salary retention involving Merzlikins also helps Toronto manage the financial side of the transaction.
On the other side, Columbus receives a young forward in Knies, additional depth through Lorentz and Andrae, and a second-round draft selection.
For the Blue Jackets, the appeal is centered heavily around acquiring a young player who has already demonstrated NHL production and could remain an important part of their core.
For Toronto, the objective appears much clearer: add more established offensive firepower around its existing stars.
