The Oilers were finally overtaken by Edmonton’s bottom-nine concerns on Saturday, which were brought on by stacking the top line. With bottom-six goals from Zack MacEwen and Vinni Lettieri, Toronto’s depth triumphed in a 7-2 rout. Neither of Leon Draisaitl’s two goals for Edmonton came at 5-on-5.
This season, that has been the trend. The crime sputters if Draisaitl and Connor McDavid don’t start moving. But I don’t believe that’s enough to cause the Oilers to vanish.
Goaltending is a more serious concern, even though I may sound like a broken record. Second-most in the NHL, the Oilers have given up 8.5 more goals than anticipated. Saturday saw Tristan Jarry surrender five goals on 30 shots, bringing his save percentage down to a dismal .853.
Since Matt Tomkins was recalled from Bakersfield on Friday as the second choice, Jarry is probably going back to the net because Devon Levi was placed on injured reserve. Over the past few weeks, Edmonton has demonstrated defensive improvement, so I won’t overreact to a poor night against Toronto, as many appear to be, whether it’s the bottom-nine forwards or the goalies.
