After weeks of NHL uncertainty, Calle Järnkrok chose to return to Brynäs IF instead of joining Mike Babcock’s Oilers.
With Järnkrok still available on the unrestricted free-agent market in late August, Edmonton had been mentioned as a potential landing location for the flexible forward.
On paper, the fit made sense. The Oilers would have benefited from having a seasoned forward who could play different positions and handle various responsibilities.

Because Järnkrok wasn’t just searching for another temporary NHL contract, the choice has more importance. He has devoted several seasons to the club where his senior career began.
Järnkrok scored 118 points in 185 games for Brynäs before leaving Sweden. Additionally, he was a member of the team that won the club’s 2012 championship.
Brynäs gets more than just a well-known name. Jarnkrok provides the roster with a seasoned player who has spent years playing up and down NHL lineups, accepting defensive assignments, and adjusting to various roles.
The timing exacerbates the decision’s impact for Edmonton. Järnkrok was the kind of experienced depth alternative that might have immediately joined the competition, with training camp approaching.
Although Stan Bowman’s front office may still investigate the free-agent market, one of the most seasoned forwards available has officially been removed from consideration.
The priorities of Järnkrok are also made evident by his choice. He has chosen stability, familiarity, and a comeback to Gävle instead of continuing his NHL career with another contract or a potential camp opportunity.
Edmonton will need to search elsewhere as what appeared to be another prospective late-summer NHL signing has transformed into a huge homecoming for Brynäs.
