Tonight, the Calgary Flames ended the Detroit Red Wings’ points streak by scoring three second-period goals against John Gibson and the Red Wings in regulation.
It was probably Gibson’s last time at the Saddledome as the veteran netminder gave up four goals on the night, and the Red Wings lost to the Flames 4-1 for the first time since 2023. It wasn’t Gibson’s finest performance.

As Gibson, newly acquired from Anaheim, adjusted to the squad in front of him to start the year, the Red Wings depended heavily on current Columbus Blue Jackets backup Cam Talbot for much of the first two months of the previous campaign. Gibson was played by the Red Wings practically every game from December on; by the end of the year, the 31-year-old goalie had played 57 games, which was the third-highest number in his career in a single season.
Gibson has started eight of Detroit’s first eleven games, and the former Anaheim Ducks netminder had a stat line of.871 sv% and 3.35 GAA heading into the game against the Flames. The Red Wings are 3-4-1 with Gibson in goal, and in two of those victories, they had to score three goals or more to win.
Tonight’s evidence demonstrated that we don’t score enough and don’t last in those situations. Todd McLellan, the head coach, stated.
However, Detroit’s offensive assault hasn’t been their strong point thus far this season; instead, they have relied significantly on team defense to stay in games. However, he is now rated 52nd among NHL goalies in goals saved over expectations this season, so there isn’t much Gibson can do about the other players on the team scoring goals.
